Two Cities - Two Cultures

Hong Kong and Seoul are unique environments, each a very high density metropolis comprising a mix of cultures and fascinating histories. This event will consider how architects leverage these attributes in their work and how the cultural and historical context of each city has inspired innovation and new ways of collaboration.

In their Emerging Voices Series, they explore how young design firms rethink and reinterpret the profession of architecture beyond day-to-day concerns, both in the area of practice and geographic boundaries.

Their panel will include four emerging practices, two based in Hong Kong and two in Seoul:

The discussion will be moderated by Eric Ho, AIA, co-founder of Architecture Commons and Neighbourhood Innovation Lab and Keojin Jin, AIA, Assistant Professor of Architectural Design at Pusan National University.

The Speakers

Atelier Chang, Soohyun Chang, SIA, Principal

Soohyun Chang founded Atelier Chang in 2011. The firm's designs aim to have a larger environmental impact and always emphasise sustainability. Their London office focuses on resorts, restaurants, and residential developments.

 Soohyun was born in Seoul, in 1980, educated in the US and now resides in the UK. She received her Bachelor of Science in Architectural Design at MIT and her Master of Architecture from the Harvard GSD.

 From 2007-11 she was with Herzog & de Meuron, then at Zaha Hadid Architects in London, Morphosis in California, HLW in Shanghai and the Media Lab at MIT. She taught an architecture studio on Organicities at EPFL, Switzerland, with Jeffrey Huang, and has been a critic at MIT, UPenn, and ETH Zurich. Soohyun received the Next Generation Design Leader Award in 2007 and her projects won 3rd place in the Affordable Housing Development competition in 2006, an Honourable Mention in the UIA Future City competition in 2006 and 2nd place in the RIBA Forgotten Space competition. In 2015 the firm’s Knot House project won an Architizer A+ Award as well as an Iconic Award in Hospitality.

Studio 10: Shi Zhou, AIA, Founder

Shi Zhou, founder of Studio 10, has practiced architecture for 16 years in the United States, Hong Kong and Mainland China. Since founding Studio 10 in 2017, she and her team have completed the design for a number of architecture and interior projects. Shi is currently a licensed Architect in New York State, an active member of the AIA and the RIBA, and a LEED AP (BD+C).

Her firm, Studio 10, is a multidisciplinary design practice based in Shenzhen with a branch office in Hong Kong, and is committed to providing bespoke, high-quality architecture, interior, product and other design services.

SS2 Architects: Jaebong Jeon, AIA, Principal & Keunyoung Lim, BSA, Principal

SS2 (formerly known as Studio Sweep 2) is a NYC / Seoul-based award-winning interdisciplinary practice founded in 2020. The firm is active in multiple fields including architecture, interior design, graphic design, film, and public art. The SS2&#39 working method combines the history of the two directors: Jeon, who studied architecture, art and technology - and Lim, who studied visual communications and practiced production design for film and architecture.

Jaebong Jeon received his Bachelor of Architecture from Hanyang University and his MArch II from the Irwin S. Chanin School of Architecture at the Cooper Union, where he focused on the balance between critical thinking and rigorous craftsmanship in the design process. He is deeply committed to the importance of combining both theory and practice in his work.

Keunyoung Lim received her Bachelor of Arts from Hongik University (Visual Communication Design) and her MArch I from the Harvard University GSD. She began her architectural practice at Doojin Hwang Architects (DJHA) in Seoul, prior to which she participated in the production design of the Korean films The Host directed by Joon-ho Bong, A Bittersweet Life by Ji-woon Kim, and Three Monster C.U.T. by Chan-wook Park.

COLLECTIVE is an international firm practicing architecture, interiors, urban and exhibition design. The practice is research and concept driven, offering powerful narratives on Clarity, Function and Beauty, and not limiting themselves to a particular genre.

Founded by Betty Ng in 2015, COLLECTIVE is co-directed by Chi Yan Chan, Juan Minguez and Katja Lam. The directors have previously worked with Rem Koolhaas / OMA and Herzog & de Meuron as senior members of design teams, leading projects worldwide. Globally oriented and headquartered in Hong Kong the firm is strongly rooted in Asia, with a studio in Madrid.

The Moderators

Eric Ho, AIA

Co-founder, Architecture Commons and Neighbourhood Innovation Lab 

 Architect, entrepreneur and urban thinker - passionate about architecture and urban environments that have a lasting impact on society - Eric Ho is the co-founder and Director of Architecture Commons, a design agency for urban innovation. He also founded Neighbourhood Innovation Lab (NIL) in 2019, a catalyst for systemic change through a range of strategic innovation options and experiments designed with and for city and regional governments, property developers, industry leaders, community organizations and policymakers.

Eric was the recipient of the Faculty Design Award at the Harvard GSD. He teaches architecture at the Chinese University of Hong Kong and design strategy at the Parsons School of Design. His work has been published in the New York Times, the Huffington Post, Fast Company, Good Magazine and PSFK, and the firm was selected among hundreds of companies as a start-up in residence by Urban-X, a startup accelerator built by BMW MINI. Spending most of his time in Asia, Eric is most passionate about finding new ways to disrupt the real estate industry and creating human-centered designs for the built environment.

Keojin Jin, AIA, Assistant Professor of Architectural Design at Pusan National University

Keojin studied architecture at the Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT) and Harvard University, and worked at Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM) in New York. Currently, he is an Assistant Professor of Architectural Design at Pusan National University (PNU), conducting various research and architectural design projects. Keojin has been involved in artistic activities that focus on the interaction between the environment and urban spaces - and the value of architecture derived from it. His works have been exhibited at Radcliffe Yard at Harvard, the Chicago Architectural Center and at the Harvard GSD. His research interests encompass alternative typologies for Korean collective housing using composite wood and delving into the fundamental principles of building materials to promote environmentally friendly architectural technologies.
