Have you ever imagined having your own home theatre? You can watch films with your family, friends, relatives, or spouse in a dedicated room with a TV or, better yet, a super big screen. Especially with the streaming services that are booming these days, watching a movie in your own home theatre will be a different experience. To set up a decent home theatre that creates an experience comparable to the cinema, there are a few things that you need to prepare. Let’s check them out!

Dedicate a room

A dedicated room is definitely the first requirement that you need to fulfil to set up a home theatre. The room should be able to house at least a TV, a sound system and a sofa. The TV and the sofa should also be set in a comfortable distance. Also, leave some space for movement and avoid overcrowding with furniture. To optimise the design outcome, refrain from using a square room, which tends to distort sounds. A rectangular room is better.

No window openings

Windows are not recommended for a home theatre room. Sunlight getting in the room will dim the TV or the screen. If made of glasses, the windows will also distort sounds.

A sound-proof room

Sound leakage may not annoy you, but occupants in other rooms. To prevent this, use acoustic material like carpet, parquet, gypsum board and plywood. Install these materials on the side and back wall as well as at the sound system area.

Optimum lighting

Besides sound, lighting is an equally important aspect in a home theatre design. To illuminate the room, use flat lights like downlights. If necessary, add dimmer to adjust its intensity to the level that is comfortable for your eyes. Avoid using hanging lights/pendant lights or big lamps as they might cause sound distortion.

Choose the right furniture

If the size of your home theatre is wide enough, you can use a reclining seat like those in cinemas to get similar experience. However, if you have a limited space, choose a comfortable sofa that can fit a lot of people at once. Before making a purchase, make sure that the furniture can fit into the room. Don’t forget to set a coffee table for snacks and drinks. It will be more fun to watch movies while also snacking, right?

Audio visual

If you have fulfilled the five requirements above, then the last thing that you need to prepare is the audio visual. There are numerous TVs available in the market these days with various features that can be suited to your budget. Choose a TV with a screen dimension that meets your needs and goes well with the size of the room. Don’t pick a TV that is too small or too big. You can opt for a projector as an alternative to TV for a more ‘cinema-like’ experience. The same goes for the sound system, choose a set of sound system that is the most suitable with the capacity of the room.
