For most people, bedroom is a private area providing respite from the stress after a whole day of activities. In this room, occupants can do their activities freely. Bedrooms could be a place to ‘escape’ from the hustle, to relax while reading a favourite book, or to talk with family members and close friends. Therefore, a bedroom should be designed to be as comfortable as possible but also functional to cater for the occupants needs.
Through spatial arrangement, furniture, and various accessories, you can create an ideal and cosy bedroom design. The choice of these elements should also be suited to the occupants’ taste to obtain a bedroom that can represent their characters. Here are eight steps in designing a comfortable, invigorating, and attractive bedroom.

Set the Position
Locate your bedroom far from a noisy or busy area like carport, roads, and kitchen. Set your bedroom on the second floor, if possible, as this could help to ensure your privacy. Moreover, pay attention also to the direction of natural light from the outside. Bedrooms that face north or south will feel cooler than those facing west or east because they will have lower solar heat gain.

Adjust the Space to Activities
There’s no limit to the activities that be done in a bedroom as it is up to the occupants to decide. The more the demands for activities done in the bedrooms, the more things required to be in the rooms. Ideally, a bedroom is only used for resting and relaxing, so it doesn’t need a big space. Beds, wardrobes, tables and chairs, also a small relaxing area, are the minimum facilities necessary to create an ideal bedroom design.

Organize Your Furniture
You can set the position of your furniture by listing down the order of activities that you usually do upon entering the room. For example, first of all, you put your bags or things (on the table), secondly, you change your clothes (near the wardrobe), and lastly, you lie down (on the bed). Make sure that the position of the furniture doesn’t hinder your movement in the bedroom. Don’t forget to choose the size of the furniture that fits in the bedroom so that it always looks tidy, well-balanced, and cosy.

Add some Greenery
Green colour has a relaxing effect that can help reducing strain after, for example, a long period of work on a laptop. You can benefit from this positive effect by adding plants in the bedroom design. You can decorate your desk or the corner of the room near the windows in your bedroom with a beautiful pot of your favourite decorative plants. You can also choose the types of plants that are easy to take care of, like cactus.

Choose the Ideal Mattress
Choosing a high-quality mattress for your bedroom is a great investment, considering that a good one could last for quite a long time, which is usually around 10 years. An ideal mattress can improve your body posture while sleeping and let you sleep better. Take good care of the mattress by keeping it away from direct exposure to sunlight.

Don’t Forget Ventilation
Openings in bedroom, such as windows, ventilation, or doors, can help to get rid of stuffiness and moisture, to control room temperature, also to allow light and natural air to flow into the room. Create a healthy bedroom by installing proper ventilation.

Choose Your Favourite Colour
Normally, there’s no ideal colour for bedrooms. Choose the colour that represents your taste and characters as the room owner, especially one that can offer you comfort. If you like bright and bold colours but are hesitant to apply them in bedrooms, use those colours as accent and mix them with softer and more neutral colours.

Add a Personal Touch
Though it may sound trivial, accessories are complementary elements that can liven up the ambience and add a personal touch to the room. Adorn your bedroom design with various collections of accessories that represent your characters, hobbies, and your personal collections. However, pay attention also to the composition of these accessories in the room in order not to be too excessive and cause the room to feel too packed and stuffy.
