Exploring Bangkok's Architectural Landscape: An AIAHK EventDuring the recent Chinese New Year, a group of ten architects from the AIA Hong Kong (AIAHK) embarked on a four-day journey to Bangkok, fostering meaningful connections with local architects and immersing themselves in the city's rich architectural tapestry. This unique trip provided an opportunity to engage with a diverse array of projects, from modernism to contemporary design, and included visits to notable architectural firms.

Engaging with Local Architects
Participants had the chance to meet influential figures in Bangkok's architectural scene, including:

Jakub Gardolinski and Savitri Paisalwattana, Co-founders of PAGAA
Twitee Vajrabhaya Teparkum, Co-founder of Department of Architecture
Kotchakorn Voraakhom, Founder of Landprocess
Russell Kim, Chief Design & Innovation Officer at Frasers Property Holdings
Patrick Keane, Founder of Enter Projects
Pichai Wongwaisayawan and Nitis Sthapitanonda, Deputy General Manager at A49

Architectural Highlights
Department of Architecture
The visit to the Department of Architecture showcased their contemporary approach through standout projects like The Commons Thonglor and The Commons Saladaeng. These retail developments emphasize community engagement with vibrant public spaces and outdoor seating designed for the modern digital nomad. The Thailand Creative and Design Centre further exemplifies their commitment to fostering collaboration among design professionals.

Ong-ard Satrabhandhu’s Legacy

Exploring the early works of Ong-ard Satrabhandhu, including the Kasetsart University Physics Building and the Summakorn Sales Office, revealed how he infused modernist aesthetics from his education in the U.S. The attention to detail and integration with the urban environment were particularly noteworthy.

Landscape Innovation with Landprocess

Projects by Kotchakorn Voraakhom of Landprocess, such as Chulalongkorn University Centenary Park and Chao Pharya Skypark, highlight a deep understanding of urban landscape design. The former creatively incorporates water management into an everyday park, while the latter addresses site constraints with an elevated public space.

One Bangkok: A Vision for Urban Development

The ambitious One Bangkok development, featuring five office towers and interconnected cultural venues, reflects a collaborative effort by firms like SOM and KPF. Conversations with Russell Kim emphasized the strategic selection process for both international and local firms, with a strong focus on enhancing public spaces.

Revitalizing Public Spaces

The extension of Benjakitti Forest Park showcases a modern approach to urban parks, blending natural features with recreational facilities. This revitalization project exemplifies a new generation of public spaces that cater to both nature lovers and active individuals.

Cultural Insights along Ratchadamnoen Klang Road

With insights from local architect Kuba at PAGAA, we explored the historical significance of Ratchadamnoen Klang Road, a civic space undergoing renovations to enhance its role as a cultural hub.

The Art of Materiality at Spice and Barley

At Spice and Barley, participants discovered Patrick Keane's innovative use of rattan, which is becoming increasingly popular for its fire-retardant properties. This exploration reflects a growing trend toward sustainability in architecture.

Office Visits: PAGAA and A49

Visiting the distinct offices of PAGAA and A49 provided valuable insights into the diverse strategies Thai firms employ in a competitive landscape. PAGAA’s boutique approach contrasts with A49’s extensive operations, demonstrating the importance of local knowledge and collaboration.

Culinary Delights and Community Building

Beyond architecture, the trip fostered camaraderie among AIAHK members through shared meals and discussions. This enriching experience highlighted the importance of immersing ourselves in the local context to better appreciate the evolution of the built environment.

As we reflect on this journey, we look forward to more AIAHK excursions that deepen our understanding of architecture through local and international perspectives. A heartfelt thank you to all who participated!
