The staying at home period gives us more time to do lots of things. One of the activities that you can do is decluttering or tidying up your home. By sorting out your things, your home will feel more comfortable and organised. You can also get rid of old stuff and decorate your rooms to make them look more interesting. Here are five decluttering tips that you can try.
Start from the room that you most frequently use
You can start tidying up your home from the area that you most frequently use. You can begin with your wardrobe or your kitchen cabinet. You don’t have to force yourself to finish tidying up the entire home in one day. If necessary, make a list of tasks that you need to do to declutter. A checklist can help someone to be more eager to finish the tasks and tick off the list.

Categorise your things
Categorising your things based on their types can help you sort out which to keep and which to throw away. Classifying your things can also make it easier for you to tidy up an area. For your wardrobe, for example, categorise your clothes based on the styles: casual outfits to wear at home, casual “going-out” clothes, or formal attires for work. For other things especially the small ones, put them in a transparent storage and try to pick the most essential things.
Don’t focus too much on throwing things away
Sometimes homeowners find it difficult to declutter as they are reluctant to throw away things at their homes. As a result, things pile up. Therefore, instead of thinking of throwing away things that you no longer use, sort out your things by using Konmari technique.

This technique, introduced by a decluttering expert, Marie Kondo, suggests that you keep things that spark joy. When you are sorting out your things, if you think that some things do not spark joy to you, put them into a special container. Then, consider whether you will still use these things in the near future or not, and whether you have a substitute that can replace them in terms of functions. Afterwards, decide whether you would like to keep them or throw them away.
Re-organise
Put the things that you have sorted out in their places based on the level of frequency they are used. Things like daily outfits, underwear, or kitchen utensils should best be placed in easily accessed places. Tidying up and re-organising your home doesn’t mean that you should buy a new wardrobe or storage. Buying new things might instead clutter your home even more. As an alternative, make use of your shoe boxes or other containers that you have at home. Give a little touch of DIY decoration to make them look attractive.

Sell or donate
Instead of throwing things away after decluttering, you can sell some of the things that can still be used in cheaper prices. Decluttering can also become a chance for you to share with others. Things in good condition that you decide not to keep, like clothes and books, can be donated to those in need.
