As stated in AS1428.1-2021 Clause 11.2 (b), stairs must have a handrail complying with Clause 12 installed on both sides as shown in Figures 26 (a & b).
Noted in NZS 4121:2001 Section 8.3.4, the top or bottom step of any flight of stairs shall not encroach into corridors so that the effective minimum width of the corridor on accessible routes or means of escape in fire, is compromised.
Under NZBC Clause D1 (Access Routes), Handrails shall be provided on both sides of accessible stairways and on both sides of accessible ramps where the ramp slope is steeper than 1 in 20.
Under NZBC Clause D1, there are a variety of stair types with differing requirements for stairway pitch, riser & tread lengths. This is so that people moving into, within or out of buildings can do so safely.
In accordance with AS1428.1-2009 Clause 11.1 (b), stairs that intersect at an internal corridor shall be set back in accordance with Figure 26(B), as shown below.
