We talk a lot about layered light at Amphis. And we don’t want to sound like a broken record, but it’s important to light a space being mindful of how it will be used. The kitchen is a great example of how to layer light for different occasions and uses.
Start with ambient or general light to illuminate the entire room. At Studio Amphis in Malvern we’ve chosen a feature pendant over the dining table, and a selection of downlights and track lights. The amount and combination of these fixtures depends on your specific room.
When it comes to illuminating bench tops for tasks, such as chopping veggies, under cabinet lights will provide extra brightness. Having a source of light in front of you, rather than behind, ensures your shadow won’t block the light.
Lastly, look to incorporate accent lighting that can emphasise architectural features, such as a pinspot. Low wattage fixtures such as step, hallway or strip lighting can also be used. These are ideal for late-night fridge raids when you don’t want to turn on brighter ceiling lights.
