Currently, standard accessible toilets do not meet the needs of all disabled people, or the needs of their carers and families. Most of these spaces to do not have the proper equipment and space necessary to cater to the needs of disabled users. The lack of appropriate toilet facilities is a significant social barrier for families and individuals, as it limits the places they can go and the time they spend out. In some instances, carers and family members have had to change their patient or loved one on the floor of a public restroom due to the lack of available facilities. More awareness is needed from commercial and business sectors about the requirements of people with disabilities.
This is why the Changing Places initiative was born.
Changing Places was launched in the United Kingdom in 2006 as a campaign advocating for full-sized change tables and hoists in key public spaces across the country. Over a quarter of a million people in the UK are in need these properly-equipped toilets.
To date, there are more than 1,000 Changing Places toilets across the UK, installed in specific public spaces such as shopping centres, large railway stations and leisure complexes.
Changing Places was established in 2014 at Ringwood Lake, Victoria. Currently, 72 Changing Places toilets have been built in specific public locations such as airport terminals, car parks and malls across all Australian states.
What comprises a Changing Places toilet
Changing Places toilets are required to include the following:
Changing Places toilets are provided in addition to and separate from standard accessible bathrooms. These spaces are not the required toilets deemed by the Building Code of Australia or Disability Standards 2010. Combining these types of toilets with regular accessible facilities compromises the needs of both user groups.
