The Melbourne Airport Domestic Terminal DDA toilet facilities has an average of 30,000 users per month. The DDA facilities were not user friendly for persons with disabilities and created the potential for wet floor hazards. Installed in the DDA bathroom was a 500mm wall basin with flickmixer, wall mounted soap dispenser to the right hand side of the mirror and a hand dryer mounted on the wall in the middle of the room also to the right hand side.
For a person with a disability, this required 4 positioning movements to wash their hands.
Movement 1. Position in front of basin and wet hands.
Movement 2. Reposition to reach soap dispenser.
Movement 3. Reposition back to the basin to rinse hands.
Movement 4. Move to the hand dryer to dry hands.
A sensor operated all-in-one Tap, Soap, Dryer and Basin was installed and eliminated 3 previous positioning movements for a person with a disability to wash their hands.
Hand washing process now is:
Movement 1. Position in front of basin, wet hands, activate soap, rinse hands, dry hands.
Result: Clean hands with minimal movement required.
Potential for Wet Floor hazard Eliminated.
