Acrovyn by Design® from Construction Specialties, was chosen for the Royal Melbourne Hospital in Victoria. The overall objective of the main entrance redevelopment was to transform a dark, chaotic space with low ceilings and multiple reception points into a light and welcoming entry; facilitating the daily movements of patients, visitors, volunteers and staff efficiently by providing clear wayâfinding.
The brief from the Royal Melbourne Hospital was to use the space to tell the story of the hospital from a people aspect. Being one of the largest and longest running hospitalâs in Victoria, the hospital has a rich 170 year archive of historical imagery that captures the research, technological advancements and the key people who have shaped the hospital throughout the decades.
Architects Clarke Hopkins Clarke took inspiration from the iconic Royal Melbourne Hospital geometric façade (corner of Royal Parade and Grattan Street) and created a montage of imagery laid out in a series of interconnected diamonds and parallelograms, creating a consistent language between the inside and outside to connect the spaces.
Senior Interior Designer, Carmen Jackson selected Acrovyn by Design® to help her to achieve both the creative and the quality objectives of the brief. âIt was great to have an option that gave us flexibility in how we graphically presented the historic story of Royal Melbourne Hospital, while also providing peace of mind that it would continue to look good and perform well into the future, even in a highly trafficked areaâ.
Hospital lobbies are high traffic environments with a significant amount of health and mobility aids, including wheelchairs and stretchers, that can scrape or bump against walls. In addition, hospitals have strict cleaning requirements for high hygiene standards, so there is use of harsh chemicals, such as bleach, to disinfect hard surfaces.
âAcrovyn by Design® provided us with confidence that the space would continue to look good and perform as intended well into the future due to its durability and flexibility. It could cope with frequent wipe downs, knocks and would not peel, fade or crackâ, said Carmen.
With a smooth installation schedule taking place after hours by LL&J Fabrication together with Kane Constructions, Kyle Ramsay the Site Manager stated, âConstruction Specialties, the manufacturer of Acrovyn, worked tirelessly to help with the refurbishment of The Royal Melbourne Hospital completing 15 surgical theatre stages in 15 weekends, as well as numerous areas like, cardiology, facial prosthetics, emergency departments, neurosciences ward and multiple corridors. The installation of Acrovyn wall protection completed a first class finishâ.
Consider Acrovyn by Design® for your next project â for design flexibility, impact resistance and easy to clean maintenance in healthcare environments.
