A study done in Australia prompts that cycling infrastructure needs to be built with women in mind -- in order to promote more women in cycling.
Currently, in Australia, the most populated cycling areas account for two men cycling for every woman.
The study has found factors preventing women from cycling actively and they are segregation from the road ways, well-lit areas and pathways to cycle on, trip planning, and knowledge of bike maintenance and mechanics.
With a massive potential for enabling active travel further for Australian women, the research showed that 77% of woman in fact are interested in riding a bike if the above barriers were not in their way.
What can Australian cities do to further promote bike riding as a viable means of active transport, and further encourage more women to see the benefits of cycling?
