In recent years, there has been growing recognition of the deep, enduring connection the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have with the land. This connection informs their traditions and art, and by incorporating these values in their designs, architects and designers can contribute to and support a strong and vibrant Indigenous culture in our built environment. Adding these design elements to our buildings, private and public infrastructure gives spaces more depth, meaning, and authenticity while also acting as a sign of respect and reconciliation.
This whitepaper discusses some of the key concepts and approaches that are important to understand for designers looking to incorporate Indigenous design into their projects. It is not intended to be a comprehensive guide but a starting point for further exploration and research. By fostering a respectful approach and a willingness to learn, architects and designers can contribute to more inclusive, culturally rich design outcomes.
