We are very proud of the leading role that Hempel has taken globally on sustainability, humanitarian actions, and biodiversity. To demonstrate how Hempel is taking real actions with regards to sustainability and the environment, we are sharing the details and metrics on how Hempel is moving the needle in these critical areas
When it comes to committing, we have gone it hard with Futureproof, our sustainability framework. Where we focus on four key areas
We at Hempel are proud to have one owner, one sole shareholder, the Hempel Foundation - dedicated to making a difference - Hempel Foundation (hempelfonden.dk)
This means that all our profits go into:
Within our business we have directly tied our sustainability performance to our bank loans whereby a successful year exceeding our ambitious sustainability KPI’s will see us receiving a lower interest rate. Conversely if we do not meet our sustainability KPI’s, we will pay higher interest rates on our loans. This combined with our commitments to the Science Based Targets initiatives demonstrate how we are taking sustainability into the core of our business.
By the end of 2023, Hempel will publicly listing the carbon footprint of over 160 of our coatings on their technical data sheets. This is the first for any paint and coatings company around the world to do and another example how we are striving to be the leader in sustainability in our industry.
Locally we have been reducing emissions through our Wattyl decorative business with the numerous green building programs for many years. Recently we have rolled these behaviours and practises into our protective coatings business with specific sustainability focussed CPD’s. We have partnered with architects to create coatings specifications for structural steel, concrete, and fire protection that are making huge impacts on reducing material consumption, VOC emissions, waste to landfill, and hazardous raw materials. Please see the Australian case studies attached which demonstrate the magnitude of the difference we have been able to make on these projects.
