Under NZBC Clause D1 (Access Routes), the width between handrails on an accessible stairway or between handrail and wall on a common stairway shall be no less than 900 mm.
The below screenshots show the absolute minimum width a stairway must be when using a wall mount, single handrail & double handrail Moddex Assistrail system. Moddex recommends that these minimum stairway widths are increased by 50 to 100 mm as a tolerance for any varying widths on site & to provide room for adjustment.
More details on the NZBC Clause D1 can be found here.
