Selecting the right sand for your project is crucial for achieving the best results. Different types of sand serve various purposes, and understanding their unique properties will help you make an informed decision.
Sand for Laying Bricks and Concrete Blocks
For laying bricks or concrete blocks, a fine “loamy” sand is essential. This type of sand allows for small adjustments to joint heights, ensuring level brickwork. We recommend our Brickies Loam for its ideal “loamy” texture. Some bricklayers also use our Gold Coast Sand and Pit Sand. For a white mortar joint, use our White Sand combined with White Cement.
Sand for Tile Screeds
When tiling, a screed is often used to achieve the desired heights on uneven or low floors. A screed, made from Medium River Sand, cement, and water, is spread evenly and leveled to create a substrate for tiles or other flooring systems. Coarse sand is required for its strength and ability to maintain thickness down to 5mm, which traditional concrete cannot achieve due to larger aggregate size. For convenience, we offer a ready-mixed Traditional Tile Screed for a more consistent mix.
Sand for Drainage
Sand is used in various drainage applications such as plumbing (poly pipe), electrical (below ground conduit), and landscaping (planter boxes and paving). Fine sands like Gold Coast Sand or Pit Sand are ideal for conduit and poly pipe, while Coarse Bedding Sand is recommended for under paving and planter box drainage. All our sands are high-quality washed natural sands, which is crucial for planter box drainage as manufactured or recycled sands can adversely affect the soil’s pH.
Sand for Rendering
While the render industry often uses bagged render products, there are still instances where a sand and cement mix is required. For these applications, we recommend our Gold Coast Sand.
