Acquired in 2016, this magnificent rural estate located in the northwest suburb of Gisborne, Victoria, was purchased with ambitious intentions of customisation to suit the owners' preferences and requirements. Despite the initial condition of the residence, the buyers, seasoned do-it-yourself enthusiasts with two previous renovations under their belt, embraced the challenge with enthusiasm and determination. Their decision was fuelled not only by their ability to envision the property's latent charm but also by the allure of the idyllic rural lifestyle it promised, conveniently close to their family and grandchildren.
Having successfully completed the most urgent updates, they decided it was now finally time to address the kitchen. The current design exuded a dated feel, characterised by an old-fashioned green colour scheme and distinctive flooring. The homeowners also identified shortcomings in the layout, deeming it less than optimal for their desired lifestyle.
In alignment with the property's style and size, their vision was to create a kitchen that exuded openness and spaciousness. A sizable island bench became a non-negotiable feature, essential for accommodating multiple chefs involved in the preparation of substantial family meals. Additionally, they envisioned this space as the perfect hub for family gatherings, especially when the grandchildren came to visit, considering the kitchen to be the heart of their magnificent home.
Working with San, the designer from Kitchen Shack Maribyrnong, the homeowners refined their design vision. Utilising the expansive island bench as a foundation, San suggested crafting spaces tailored to their lifestyle. the island's size, incorporating appliance and storage nooks, and optimizing under-bench storage were key elements in ensuring their satisfaction with the final kitchen layout.
Hailing from a Scandinavian background, the homeowners prioritised an induction cooktop to align with their cooking preferences. San proposed incorporating it into the island to elevate its prominence as a focal point.
Embracing European design and German-engineered silent intelligence, the Schweigen Silent IS4110S diverges from the bulkiness of traditional rangehood styles. Unlike most canopies that may create a confined feeling, the IS4110S has the opposite effect, visually expanding the entire kitchen space. The contemporary appeal of this rangehood is underscored by its angular design, featuring soft-touch eye-level controls, a stainless-steel finish, and a 15-minute delay timer with automatic shut-off, making it a sought-after choice for modern kitchens.
In achieving the desired aesthetic for the homeowners, Shaker cabinets in Lava have been skilfully paired with YDL Stone bench tops in Silver Star White. This choice harmonises with the overall ambience of the residence, creating a timeless style statement that seamlessly integrates with the new wooden flooring, producing a "contemporary classic" feel.
To complete the look, traditional chrome shell handles adorn the lower cabinets, while chrome knobs embellish the uppers. Prioritizing usability, drawers have been chosen for the majority of under-bench storage, optimizing the functionality of the space. This is complemented by concealed cupboards beneath the island bench, cleverly transforming the seating area into additional storage.
Enhancing functionality, a "breakfast nook" has been incorporated near the adjoining living area. This designated space is ideal for housing the kettle and toaster, aiming to streamline the homeowners' morning routine. The addition of a spice rack and a pull-out bin system seamlessly integrated into the new cabinetry further enhances the kitchen's practicality.
