Since it first opened in the first semester of 2018, a number of national and international athletics events have been held at the Stadium Miramas Métropole. On February 16th and 17th, the venue will also host the France Élite Championships, a qualifying round for the European indoor championships held in March in Glasgow. Yet another opportunity for the Stadium to demonstrate its many qualities, acknowledged and praised by athletes and their audience alike.
Unlike any other venue in the South of France, the Stadium Miramas Métropole is one of the largest covered athletics facility in Europe, and the only one along the Mediterranean coast, between Barcelona and Genoa. The project was initiated by the French Athletics Federation and built in the greater Aix-Marseilles Provence metropolitan area, under the authority of the Ouest-Provence district council, now the Istres-Ouest Provence Council. The venue is the latest addition to the Molières sporting complex, which already comprised of a stadium and an aquatics centre. It was designed to host the world’s most prominent competitions, team sport events and, thanks to the facility’s great versatility, a variety of entertainment events..
Conducted as part of a design-build contract awarded to Travaux du Midi, SMC2 and Chabanne, the project called upon the complementary expertise of all the parties involved:
Travaux du Midi, a subsidiary of Vinci Construction France based in Provence, which coordinated the design and structural engineering phases, the construction of the terraces and tracks, roads and utility services, and second fixings;
Chabanne Architecte, a specialist of complex, large-scale projects, which designed this high-scale facility; SMC2, specialised in the design and construction of sports arenas with a wooden frame and textile roofing, which built the facades, the truss and the roof;
Serge Ferrari Group, a vocal advocate of economical and eco-friendly construction techniques, which provided its expertise for weaving and coating high-performance composite membranes that combine flexibility, light weight, permeability to light and high resistance.
