In Shanghai, China, Chongming Island recently hosted the tenth edition of China Flower trade fair, where the Serge Ferrari Group’s expertise took centre stage once more. At the main entrance of the Flower Expo Garden, a structure shaped like two white magnolias in bloom with large veined leaves was covered with more than 5,000 sqm of Flexlight 1302 S2 membrane.
The two large flower-shaped structures consist of a steel frame 19.21 metres high and 100 metres wide, covered with more than 5,000 sqm of Serge Ferrari’s Flexlight 1302 S2 membrane chosen for its technical properties: durability, translucency, excellent dimensional stability and PVDF coating for easy care and maintenance.
A FLEXIBLE MEMBRANE FOR OUTSTANDING ARCHITECTURE
With Flexlight 1302 S2, the architects had the freedom to fully express their creativity and devise a truly singular design! The structure was created from steel tubes imitating the veins on a leaf and serves as a support for the membrane. The choice of using a membrane — a flexible composite material — considerably reduced the volume of steel needed for the construction without compromising the architects’ vision. Perfect as projection backdrop, the structure was further embellished by a sea of flower blossoms displayed in 3D holographic imagery.
Many more possibilities were anticipated during the initial design phase and onward: the membrane is finished with a coating for easier care and maintenance, which also ensures the material remains white throughout the event. As for the structure’s flower shape, it is not only aesthetically motivated but also serves to collect rainwater, which can then be purified and used for automatic irrigation and site cleaning.
