The French composite membrane manufacturer Serge Ferrari has been chosen to supply materials for the tensile roofs of Camp Sarika’s ten majestic pavilions, an innovative project nestled at the heart of the Grand Canyon that has won multiple awards (Radical Innovation Awards, Hospitality Design Awards and International Property Awards).
Located at the heart of the Grand Canyon, Camp Sarika is a spectacular destination for travellers looking to enjoy a unique experience surrounded by magical, unspoiled landscapes.
Tucked away in the wilderness of the Grand Canyon, the undulating shapes and understated colours of the ten tented pavilions of Camp Sarika are a nod to the sand and rock tone subiquitous in the desert. The project’s breathtaking architecture and environmentally-friendly design have already won multiple international awards, including the Radical Innovation Awards, Hospitality Design Awards and the International Property Awards.
THE SERGE FERRARI GROUP WON CONTRACT THANKS TO THE OUTSTANDING TECHNICAL AND AESTHETIC QUALITIES OF ITS PRODUCTS
Several companies were initially consulted to find the best technology for a very challenging set of technical and environmental requirements, but the contract was eventually awarded to the Serge Ferrari Group for the unparalleled performance of its flexible composite membranes. The project’s technical design team and architects chose Flexlight Dualtone 702, an innovative solution developed to with stand the site’s extreme conditions.
The tensile roofs had to sustain significant temperature variations between - 15° and 45°C and severe weather conditions, ranging from frost and snowfall to intense heat. Because the desert is a dusty environment, the material also needed to be highly resistant to fouling to ensure the canvas would look the same durably. Combining excellent mechanical resistance and proven colour fastness, this membrane is able to meet project requirements both in terms of design (softslope) and extreme weather conditions (wind speeds up to 145 km/h, intense UV exposure).
In addition to the aesthetic and technical aspects of the architecture, Flexlight Dualtone 702 delivers optimal comfort for occupants of the lodges. The membrane is 100% opaque even on very sunny days and acts effectively as a thermal shield to reduce the need for air conditioning and save energy, while ensuring optimal comfort for guests.
AN INNOVATIVE SOLUTION FOR A SPECTACULAR PROJECT AT THE HEART OF THE ARIZONA DESERT
Resort developer Luxury Frontiers was in charge of the general architecture of the project, while the technical design, supply and construction of all tensile systems were entrusted to Tenthouse Structures. Together, the team turned to the Serge Ferrari Group to design a bespoke membrane in Pepper — a colour that blends in perfectly with the surrounding environment. This incredibly light membrane also allowed construction to use less materials for minimal environmental impact.
Thanks to the unique properties of Flexlight Dualtone 702, designers were able to keep the structure under the maximum authorised height and preserve the landscape’s integrity. The required airflows’ curvature and deflection angle were achieved by means of a lower centremast height, additional cables under the canvas and strongly curved edges positioned at strategic points. This was made possible due to the Flexlight Dualtone 702 membranes’outstanding mechanical resistance, and above all because of the Serge Ferrari Group’s unique Précontraint technology which made the membrane sizing extremely stable.
