The engineering consultancy Arcora has chosen Serge Ferrari to supply the fabric used for the indoor blinds of the new Orange campus — a large-scale project located in the central district of Lyon Part-Dieu in Lyon, France. The project received Excellent-levelHQE (High Environmental Quality) certification for its sustainable and ethical design, to which Serge Ferrari contributed with the equally eco-friendly Soltis Feel 99 LowE, a solution specifically developed to reduce energy consumption inside buildings.
Inaugurated in November 2020, the “Orange Lumière” campus now houses 3,000 employees hailing from 18 sites previously scattered throughout the city. The sloped architecture of the new premises was created to preserve the old France Télécom telephone exchange, keeping the history of the site alive. Originally designed by architect André Gutton in 1972 and entirely clad in orange tiles, this notable city landmark is listed among France’s Historical Monuments.
A LARGE-SCALE HQE-CERTIFIED DEVELOPMENT PROJECT
Two new wings — north and south — were added along either side of the historical building. The three structures are linked together in the middle by a glazed hall — dubbed the Agora — and all windows are fitted with indoor blinds in Soltis Feel 99 Low E. In total, just under 11,000 sqm of technical fabric were manufactured and installed, delivering an efficient solution to control the intake of natural light and regulate the temperature inside the various spaces of the buildings — offices, collaborative spaces and food service areas —, which in turn contributes to greater energy conservation efficiency and improved comfort for employees.
The fabric’s light grey colour was selected to match the raw concrete inner pillars, while the thinness of the material allows the use of very unobtrusive roller systems that blend in seamlessly with the surrounding architecture. Copyright Aurélien Vivier The project’s thermal insulation required special attention as the site faces south, providing all-day sun exposure, and incorporates mostly glazed façades. Thanks to its unique technical performance, Soltis Feel 99 LowE acts as an effective thermal barrier. Its low-emission metallic side guarantees limited heat re-emission inside, there by reducing the building’s need for air conditioning.
Employee comfort has been a particular focus for office spaces, which feature cross-through open floor plan, plenty of natural light, carefully curated furniture, planted terraces on every floor, and even fragrance diffusers, creating different olfactory ambiences in every room depending on its usage. The choice of fabric for the indoor blinds was another crucial factor to consider for work place comfort. Individually and easily adjustable, each blind delivers optimal control of natural light intake to reduce glare on computer screens, without fully blocking theviews over the green areas surrounding the buildings.
SERGE FERRARI: ACT NOW TO BUILD A BETTER TOMORROW
With this virtuous new project, the Group is reaffirming its support for better construction tomorrow, sustainable building and better living. Serge Ferrari is committed to building better with less and to act accordingly. Building better means facilitating new daily habits through solutions that are safer, more functional, and more durable, ensuring maximum comfort in terms of both design and quality of life.
Building with less means choosing lighter and more durable materials in architecture to address today’s growing concerns over climate change and environmental impacts, and deliver safer, more comfortable home and workspace environments. “To achieve that, we must take full responsibility and develop innovative composite fabrics that will provide solutions to meet the urgent environmental challenges we are currently facing.”
