After working with interior designer and stylist, Lori Bolon, on her Vaucluse project, we were taken by her eye for creating calm, thoughtfully designed spaces. A home of light, serene finishes that are as enduring as they are beautiful, Bolon’s interior palette perfectly matches the home’s Vaucluse location.
Here, the designer and stylist talks us through the process of choosing a timber floor, and offers tips for home renovators looking for that perfect colour.
Talk to us about the design inspiration and aesthetic for your Vaucluse project?
This project is located along the coastline of Sydney and the brief was to create a beach inspired family home with modern influences. The project explored layering different textures of light tones to create a sophisticated and warm family home.
What was the decision process in choosing a floor? What were you looking for?
Creating the perfect beach home meant timber floorboards was an essential component in the success of the project. I always knew I wanted a white washed oak floor, but this had to be a pre finished product as I had previously done lime washing to my own floorboards which didn’t go as planned. The scale of the project meant changing floor finishes would help naturally differentiate spaces. I used timber floorboards in all the family areas to create a warm and relaxed environment. I then used a tile in all hallways and the entry as this served to be a more practical material in a high traffic area. Given some of the spaces were so large I also changed the direction of the floorboards from room to room to add some character and detail to the interiors.
Why did you choose WOODCUT?
I searched the entire market for white washed timber floorboards and was attracted to WOODCUT as they had the most extensive colour range. This was especially the case in the lighter colours. It also happened to be well priced, with great customer service. The clients and I visited the showroom a couple of times and instantly fell in love with the Pearl White wash, so the decision was easy for us.
As a designer, what tips would you share with a home renovator without your design experience to look for when choosing a floor?
There are so many options available these days which can make the process incredibly overwhelming. Take the time to establish the project brief, and be clear in the aesthetic you are trying to achieve. Then, understand that a flooring choice can make a significant difference to the look and feel of a space.
