The Block Kitchens – inspiration and trends
When it comes to big reveals on The Block, Kitchen Week is one of the highlights. If you’re looking for a quick masterclass on trends, styles and layouts, The Block kitchens provide a rich collection of clever and creative options.
The Block Kitchen big winners
2022’s Omar and Oz’s palette of moody greys and charcoal was a bold choice for a country style home, but one the judges loved. Highly polished glass and steel surfaces brought light to the muted panelling and concrete floors, with multifunctional black tapware matching black sinks.
In contrast was Tom and Sarah-Jane’s sumptuous country-style kitchen. Glossy white textured subway-style tiles rose to the ceiling, white panelling throughout, accented by a huge rose gold fridge and gunmetal blue stove and rangehood with rose gold trims. Interestingly, the couple chose a gold tap for their tapware, adding richness and depth to their colour scheme, and got bonus points for the pot filler tap above the stove top.
Butler’s pantries
In homes as luxurious as those on The Block, butler’s pantries are a common feature. Second sinks mean a lot of the preparation and cleaning up can take place behind the scenes, leaving the main kitchen free for entertaining. Services such as dishwashers can be hidden out of sight, and bulk-bought items can be stored for easy, but not visible, access.
Tapware trends
Unsurprisingly, Matte Black tapware is a popular choice among The Block contestants. Practical, stylish and contemporary, Matte Black is Zip’s best-selling finish. From Tanya and Vito’s art deco-inspired kitchen with pale pink cabinetry, terrazzo bench and black accents in 2021, all the way back to Dean and Shay, winners from 2015, black tapware has been a mainstay of The Block kitchens, and for good reason. Endlessly versatile, Matte Black matches all kitchen styles, and is easy to maintain.
Brushed warm metallics in Gold, Rose Gold and Brass are also current popular choices, bringing multifunctional elegance to a range of kitchen styles. Andy and Deb chose Gold taps for their winning kitchen in 2019, matched with white panelling, marble bench and splashback and Gold drawer pulls and handles.
