In recent years, changes in the structure of educational processes have seen the emergence of the Middle School concept. The new Middle School at Brisbane Grammar School comprises two purpose-built, inter-linked wings designed to promote and encourage flexible teaching methods and approaches. These three-storey wings form a new courtyard space, which is the focus of the Middle School — setting it apart, but still within, the main school campus.
The building adopts a contemporary composition and expression of the traditional brick and tile character of this historic campus.?A more lightweight and informal feel has been adopted on the internal elevations, involving the extensive use of open verandah areas and vertical battening, which open out to the newly constructed courtyard area. The scale and character of these areas has been designed to be more welcoming and responsive to the younger students.
This development delivers a sympathetic building design outcome which appropriately reflects, and sits comfortably with, the prevailing architectural expression of the school.
