Located in Surabaya, Indonesia, HS-WS House is a side by side house for two brothers with their own small family. The design was centered on the owners adheres to a minimalist lifestyle. Although made from the expression of each individuals, the two homes synergize into a dialogue. To the surrounding neighbors, the minimalist houses appears in contrast and stood out.
The challenge was creating a simple, functional, and efficient home on a limited plot of land. Thus, the houses were designed in a compact way so that it can meet all the needs that exist with an integrated open plan interior layout. The first floor consist of the public areas, living, dining, and kitchen area. Whilst the second floor consist of the private bedrooms. Void area with skylight is placed at the back of the house to provide dramatic natural lighting that highlight high wall and functions to maximize air circulation so that hot air rises above the building.
Wood material are used to give a hint of nature, with and addition of plants located beside the dining and kitchen area. The land behind the house is a residual land that is not owned and cannot be built. Originally functioned as a retaining wall area which inadvertently formed an alley that is now used as a small garden.
