The 1880 Victorian terrace house was restored and renovated into a 3 bedroom, 3 bathroom family home. Although the home was in good structural condition, numerous unsuitable alterations, as well as years of neglect led the building to fall into a state of disrepair. Accurate and precise planning and attention was required throughout each phase of the design process to ensure that the heritage character and integrity of the property was fully restored.
The exterior of the house saw a complete restoration of verandahs and lacework. Combined with new windows, the first-floor front room and verandah were transformed from a dark, stuffy space into a light, ventilated, indoor/outdoor living area with expansive views over Royal Park. Restoration of the interior of the house included high ornate ceilings, picture rails, chandeliers, timber flooring and four fireplaces to all be in working order. These restorations were combined with new additions to the grand home to develop a modern renovation.
The extension only highlights the integrity of the 19th Century heritage building without any notion of blurring its original form. The respectful addition compliments the property’s history as it adapts to domestic life in the 21st Century.
Modern technologies including hydronic heating, security alarm, vergola (motorised pergola) and roller doors provide secure access for two car spaces or option for occasional large informal entertaining. Careful design decisions and prudent allocation of the usable budget has transformed this outdated building into an environmentally responsible, elegant and functional home.
