Zhuma is a Japanese restaurant, located at one of the most prestigious shopping malls in Jakarta, Indonesia. The idea and concept behind Zhuma is a fully traditional Japanese restaurant with Japanese culture and philosophy behind the design concept. The restaurant uses traditional Japanese emblems or what the Japanese called “Kamon” as one of the main traditional elements throughout the restaurant. “Kamon” is a unique culture and tradition you can find only in Japan. A “Kamon” is used to represent a unique identity of a family and can be applied to clothings, weapons and even furnitures.
The interior design of Zhuma is based on the traditional aspects of Japan, emphasizing on the natural aspects. A zen garden in Japan and the concept of Yin and Yang are the inspirations for the design. The designer wants to paint a picture of traditional Japan, using the interior design as the brush, giving the people inside it tranquility and peace of mind. The three dominating elements in the design is the dark colored wood, the greyish stone and the plants. The dark colored wood represents the warm side while the stone represents the cold side of nature, creating balance and harmony, also adding the plants to symbolize the lives living inside nature.
Zhuma is divided into three main areas; the sushi bar, the main dining area and the outdoor dining area. People can enter the restaurant through the two entrance; the one through the sushi bar and the one through the outdoor dining. People can already see the “Kamon” from the outside, used as the lit background for the sushi bar and as partitions separating the main dining area and the outside dining area. While not common, the center point and the starting point of the restaurant is actually not the entrance but the red kimono with sakura emblems all over it at the far corner of the restaurant.
The Kimono at the back of the main dining represents spring that spreads to the other areas, just like a sakura tree when the flowers are beginning to bloom and later the petals begin to fall. The wind blows, creating ripples and spreading the petals to the other areas. The levelling of the wooden ceiling represent the rippling water and the sakura prints on the table represents the fallen petals, just like a beautiful picturesque view of a calm pond in the middle of spring in Japan with cool wind blowing. The sushi bar is pictured as the garden at the side of the pond, with the big stone at the cashier table and the bonsais near the main dining area. The Outdoor dining area symbolizes the sakura garden and the koi pond. The sakura from the red kimono spreads to the outside, the darker and calm area of the main dining area shifts into the outdoor area where it is brighter and and full of life, representing the season change from spring to the warmer summer. The transition is made very subtle, using several openings so that the change is not too drastic. The end of the sakura petals from the pond and the garden is at the vip dining room at the end of the outdoor dining area. The table is embellished with prints of koi fishes and sakura petals, symbolizing the little koi pond.
The three areas together paints a beautiful zen garden, with sakura petals falling and flowing freely following the ripples of the water. Sakura and koi fish are used to further accentuate the value of Japanese culture in which sakura is a symbol of happiness, calmness and serenity while koi fish represents the dark and light side of life, just like Yin and Yang.
