Gammon Construction is pleased to announce it has been awarded a HK$2.6 billion (US$331 million) contract by Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group to construct an A-grade office building in Causeway Bay.
Located at the former Excelsior Hotel site, the building is designed by Kohn Pedersen Fox in association with Ronald Lu & Partners. The project scope includes construction of a 25-storey office building with a podium for retail, F&B shops. Footbridges will also be built to connect with World Trade Centre and the LAFORET shopping mall.
As the development is situated in a busy commercial district with adjoining operating offices and domestic buildings, safety will be paramount, and works must be delivered to stringent standards, as well as with minimal disturbance to the surrounding community.
Gammon will also adopt smart construction throughout the project lifecycle, from design to handover, and create a common data environment accessible to all project participants enhancing collaboration and streamline the construction work processes. The project aims to achieve BEAM Plus Platinum rating as well as WELL platinum and LEED platinum certifications.
Gammon’s Chief Executive Kevin O’Brien said: “We look forward to working with Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group and their professional team to bring back another exemplary building to the shoreline of Hong Kong Island and showcasing our collaborative and digital approaches to modern construction that continues to evolve. The sustainable consideration and features of the design will enable the project to achieve the high level of green accreditation that this ambitious project is targeting.”
Works on the superstructure will commence in Q4 2022 and is expected to be complete in Q1 2025. More than 900 workers will be employed on the project during the peak period.
Gammon was also responsible for demolition of the Excelsior Hotel which previously occupied the site, as well as groundworks to prepare for the redevelopment.
