About Groundwork Architecture + Urbanism Ltd

Groundwork was first founded in London, 2007, for the exploration of experimental architecture, urban and landscape design. Our formal studio, Groundwork Architecture + Associates Ltd.(a.k.a Groundwork Architecture & Urbanism Ltd.), was founded in Central, Hong Kong, 2011, where we have realised a range of professional, social and theoretical projects. We have grown within the recent years and we are actualizing more of our visions in Asia and around the world for a group of prestigious clients. Our practice celebrates simplicity, technology, research and humanity, and most important of all, our clients’ visions. Our design approach are minimalistic: we love constraints; we love working with both tangible and intangible material, especially lighting. Both Manfred Yuen and C.Y Lau were trained in Hong Kong and Britain, both of them have acquired years of professional experiences, serving local and international design practices on management levels before the establishment of Groundwork. Apart from Manfred’s professional engagements, he is also serving as a visiting lecturer for The University of Hong Kong, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University and hold various honourable advisory positions for various local organizations. Groundwork works were exhibited at the London Architecture Biennale in 2008, Hong Kong Shenzhen Architectural Biennale of 2009, 2011, 2013 and 2015. On the other end our design spectrum, we focus on the application of our work on humanity. We have helped various NGOs and charity organizations in Hong Kong designing civic buildings, elderly homes and home improvement projects. We are proud to be from Hong Kong and it is our wish to contribute to the dynamic of our city.
