With 1/3 of the population becoming an elderly in Hong Kong by 2041, it is essential to have an elderly-friendly environment that encourages active ageing by allowing elderlies to remain active and independent, as both leads to better physical and mental health. What is better to encourage active ageing than letting them maintain their own lifestyle, have assistive technology blend into your accustomed environment? Being able to blend into their existing daily life is a great start.
Assistive technology does not have to be bland, it can be nice and good looking too. Here are some of the more stylish designs that would give a lovely home ambience.
Wrappon, a self-sealing commode chair that is normally disguised as a bedside chair when closed, with its wooden frame and soft padded seats. Being hygienic due to its high-quality sealing ability, trapping odour and germs inside, the commode chair can be placed right next to the bed without worries of cross-contamination.

Homeguardian is another technology that blends perfectly into home ambience, living room or bedroom. From its appearance, you would think of it as a speaker or a decoration with its wooden texture and soft fabric front façade, but it is a Fall Detection device. Although it uses camera to detect a fall, to protect the user’s privacy, the AI (Artificial Intelligence) calculation is performed within the device and never onto the cloud server. It will notify carer, nurse or relatives should any activity raise alarm.
