We were commissioned to ascertain potential under-used and vacant GIC sites and industrial buildings to accommodate small households to address the acute demand for affordable housing in urban areas. Areas examined included Tsuen Wan, Cheung Sha Wan, Tai Kok Tsui, Mong Kok, Yau Ma Tei and Ma Tau Kok. It was concluded that some of the sites could be used as alternative decanting sites for temporally accommodating some of the existing uses if required. A new composite building could accommodate various GIC employees, for instance, indoor cooked food facilities, in the lower floors with the small household accommodation on the upper floors. A feasibility study was also conducted to ascertain potential industrial buildings in Cheung Sha Wan and Kwun Tong that could be revitalised for small household accommodation.
