Morningside College, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong (w studio shanghai)
The Morningside College at the Chinese University of Hong Kong is a joint project with Ben Wood Studio in Shanghai. Completed in 2011, the college is a 150-room halls of residence, separated into an upper and lower block.
The buildings border a central plaza, designed to act as the primary gathering place for the university’s students. The plaza serves to link each of the buildings together, forming a single, cohesive whole.
Seeking to capture the university’s existing architectural spirit, Gravity developed a design language primarily inspired by the site’s earliest buildings. The concrete and brickwork reflect those used in the university’s oldest structures and the lower block curves to follow the contours of the adjacent hillside.
In this way, Gravity has managed to capture the essence of the university whilst creating a new and modern accommodation block for the university’s students.
