Inspiration for interior design can come from anywhere. When VERB STUDIO and PARA DESIGNWORKS designed this residential property in Hong Kong, the intent was to take the surroundings into mind. That is, the view of the calm waters and tranquil islands. But, more than that, the design team drew ideas from the mood of Impressionist music masterpieces, the Gymnopedie No.1 by Erik Satie and Arabesque No.1 by Claude Debussy. Altogether, the home is a picture of strength and quietude.
The 3,185sqft villa spans across three floors and a basement. The master bedroom and en suite bathroom, as well as a bedroom and its bathroom, and a library occupies the first level. The second floor comprises another bedroom with bathroom, a dressing room, a terrace and a storage area. From the entrance, one steps into the kitchen and dining area. These look into the living area, located on a lower split level, and out towards the view of the surroundings.
With timber, terrazzo and the rich plaster finish of marmorino, the villa evokes a masculine ambience that is at once warm and inviting. Stairs are located on one side of the home, leading down towards the living area. Stairs leading to the other floors are sequestered behind a red marble wall. A wall of bookshelves also finds its place on one of the upper floors. The mix of warm finishes is balanced with large slabs of granite that sheathe the living area walls and base of the timber volume. A baby grand piano takes pride of place on a platform in the living area.
The bedrooms and bathrooms are mostly decked out in a mix of grey stone and timber finishes, balancing out warm and cool. Another bathroom sports marble walls instead. The design team gave careful attention to lighting. The aim was to accentuate the luxurious finishes used throughout the property. The lighting strategy evokes cosiness that one can enjoy with company in some areas and quiet contemplation alone in others. Each shelf is lit, bringing depth and dimension to the stunning feature.
This is a large abode, yet VERB + PARA has scaled down the spaces where necessary. The spaciousness of the double volume living area is perfect for entertaining. The dining area is a cosy nook for conversations over meals. Slabs, shelves and niches change up the volume of each space as one experiences the interiors. The home fascinates the senses, yet it retains the tranquillity that it was designed for.
