Are you currently building your dream house or modernizing an old house? Sooner or later you have to think of the appropriate doors. Apart from design and material of the doors, it is important to have the correct door size. To give you all necessary information that you might need regarding the correct door sizes we have made a summary in this Hörmann tip.
How big a door should be not only depends on the location, but also design aspects and accessible designs. The specifications regarding door measurements are defined and determined in DIN 18101. This standard contains information about door measurements, wall opening measurements as well as further components like frames and door handles.
When deciding to get a new door while building a house or renovating an old one, get advice from an expert beforehand. This expert cannot only help you to find the appropriate door for your requirements, but also determines the exact measurement for you. This is especially important as even the smallest inaccuracies of measurements can affect the installation as well as the function of the new door. To get an overview to evaluate the sizes approximately for your consultation and get an initial quote you should proceed as follows:
1. The door height is measured from the top edge of the floor until the lower edge of the wall opening. (Height wall opening dimension)
2. The door width is measured from wall to wall (width wall opening measurement).
3. For the wall thickness you are going to measure how thick the wall is. But be careful: surrounding materials such as rendering or flagstones also have to be counted.

If you already know how big the door has to be approximately, you can get a first offer from your partner to get an overview of the costs. He will not only advise you, but will also carry out the measuring of the exact opening of the door, the installation of a new door as well as the disposal of old components. In this way you can be sure that there will be no nasty surprises like additional costs afterwards.

Special measurements for room doors are measurements that do not match regular standard sizes. For example, the wall opening in old buildings are most of the time not standard measurements as they do not have standardized door openings. If a house should be wheelchair friendly, doors with a width of at least 900 mm are recommended, as they allow passing through with a wheelchair. If you want to achieve a special effect for your room doors, this can be realized with special measurements and for example room-high doors. Certified partners of Hörmann can help when choosing the appropriate door and can give you more information about the options for special measurements.
