Kerobokan is a small place located on Bali island, Indonesia, the location provides new opportunities, journeys, and a convivial atmosphere. Open living concept and tropical façade to enjoy the rice paddy view in a lush tropical environment.
The Design itself is based on a simple L-shaped mass with a folded roof accent that consists of a two-story floor property. The upper floor programs a gym, bedrooms and bathroom, and outdoor space for sunbathing. Downstairs consists of the Master Bedroom and Bathroom, a Cinema room, and a high ceiling for the main living space for kitchen, dining, and Living Room with a simple and tropical approach to the design, highlighting wood elements in the kitchen.
The interconnections in between have a captivating pond and water features. The L-shaped arrangement creates a central area toward the outdoor decking and swimming pool, which will be blended in with the tropical plants in the garden and the lush tropical environment that surrounds the property. Spatial configurations, flow, and sun path are carefully thought out to provide an immersive and tranquil experience for the residents living inside.
Proportions for the villa are synergized with the Balinese concept of adapting human scale proportions inside the design, to create a humble and friendly atmosphere for the people inside. The initial idea was to create cross-air circulation between the opening and solid wall to introduce warmness into the villa from the strong tropical sun. The lower volume appears more as a platform of space that merges with the pool and the garden due to the lightness of its enclosing elements.
The material palate is chosen in consideration to create a maximal experience with a minimal form. The palate consists of a simple white wall, a wooden roof and decking, and a natural-toned interior. This theme will become timeless and sophisticated.
The tropical environment changes the way of thinking and living for the people inside, residents always enjoy the full immersion of the tropical atmosphere and embrace this element. For that reason, the roof in a folded 4-sided “origami” shape is created to give enough sloping for the strong rainy season, this roof is also stitched together with a large glass panel opening to give maximum view for the living space. However, to protect it from too much sun exposure, this large window is protected by a roof overhang that enhances the bioclimatic quality of the property.
Above all, our project is an explorative of sustainable practices and the promotion of local craftsmanship. By sourcing locally available materials and collaborating with skilled artisans, we appreciated the principles of modern tropical but also contributed to the character of the materiality. This design is more than just an architectural style; it's a way of life that respects the environment, celebrates local treatments, and offers residents and guests an unparalleled experience of comfort and authenticity. It's a true embodiment of "Modern Tropical," where every detail tells a story of harmony, uniqueness, and a commitment to the essence of the context.
