BAR
A range of industrial materials were used to transform this stark space into an atmospheric dimly-lit bar, featuring panels of wire mesh fencing and antique glazed walls throughout.
Wood, amber, brown and earth tones bring warmth and softness to the space and contrast with its industrial elements and raw walls.
Large windows with wooden panes over the full width open the space up to the front and provides a recessed view onto the busy street-life.
The caged bar forms the centrepiece. The bar front utilises corrugated steel and on top features a large fence of wire mesh panels reaching to the ceiling. The shiny surface of the black granite counter contrasts the rustic quality of the metal and gives it an edgy character.
A comfortable large u-shaped banquet is set within the walls of the main bar area and is accompanied by low marble tables and cushioned stools. This gives the perfect setting for laid back dining, pre-diner drinks or late night cocktails.
While for more intimate affairs separate seating for groups or pairs are created in the four rooms that are divided by large panels of diamond shaped mesh wire, adorned with subtle metal flower detailing. Sets of antique armchairs and sumptuous leather sofas combined with low stools and tables, set on dark earth-tone carpets, creates an intimate and underground ambience with a cutting edge look.
Dozen of vintage crystal chandelier cup lights emerge from the ceiling at the entrance, all the way throughout the rooms, creating a sea of crystal flowers and gives the space an enigmatic atmosphere.
Swings at the entrance and in the rooms gives the place a playful and naughty touch.
In the hallway in front of the rooms, pairs of vintage fauteuils are positioned next to the antique glazed wall. A subtle arrangement of crystal cup lights throw delicate shapes on the wall and will guid you to the end of the hallway, where a massive golden door grant access to the restaurant …. and where you will enter a completely different world.
The mix of distressed walls with the delicate lighting and marble tables gives Somchai’s bar a seductive ambience but with a secret back alley atmosphere. The space has an edgy, warehouse feel, yet still slightly exclusive. Urban cool with a slice of luxury and touch of rebellion.
RESTAURANT
The restaurant of Somchai pays tribute to the rich heritage of the Old Siam world. It represents a journey through time, a conversation between the old and the new world. Somchai's restaurant offers sophisticated dinning in an elegant monumental surrounding.
The melancholy of the past and engraved memories are reflected in the artworks and materials. The use of traditional forms and shapes, translated with modern materials and with minimalistic finishings takes it into a contemporary setting.
The combination of classical elements and modernist styles realised in materials that evoke elegant, understated luxury with just a hint of decadence: brown marble, dark woods, brass, black lace, smoked glass and rich upholstery.
Deep warm red and purple tones combined with painterly darks and a splash of gold forms a rich dramatic palette creating a distinguished ensemble.
Upon entering through the colossal golden door, the high ceiling and the large open space immediately gives the feeling of grandeur.
The main focal point of the dining room are a fair amount of oversized custom-made brass lanterns covered with black lace, arranged in line throughout the middle of the ceiling. The fragile and delicate texture of the lace gives a sensual feel around the room.
A line of large arched mirrors reflects the green wall of the outdoor area and makes the place airy and vibrant. The smoked glass and size of the mirrors gives a cavernous feel like an old ballroom long in disuse.
Between full height dividers with an enlarge rattan weaving pattern, booths are created which provides the guests with a more intimate dining.
The dining area is dived in the middle by an over-dyed runner that leads to a large brown marble bar. Above the bar a wine room is situated with an impressive illuminated window display for the wine bottles, reaching all the way to ceiling.
The large striking historical photographs, featuring portraits of the first Kings of Siam, are subtly touched up with gold leaf.
Somchai’s restaurant pays a hommage to an old forgotten era: the era of the first kings of Siam. A treasurer of the past, restored to its former grandeur and made relevant again in contemporary life.
