Designing a Small Bedroom? Follow this 7 Do’s and Don’ts

These days, space for housing is quite limited in big cities, which leaves homeowners with no choices but to have a small-space residence. Rooms are getting smaller, including bedrooms, but they have to remain cosy for the sake of occupants’ well-being. However, designing a small bedroom to become comfortable is tricky and many can go wrong if you don’t think it through.

Although it can be complicated, having a small bedroom properly designed is possible. Attention to details is the key and here are seven tips of do’s and don’ts of designing a small bedroom:

Do’s: Space-savvy furniture

A small bedroom can’t contain much bulky furniture. If you do want to fit in some furniture, make sure you spare enough space to move around easily. Choosing space-saving furniture is the key to design a small bedroom. You can create storage under the bed, as a built-in wardrobe, a chaise lounge with storage compartment, and many other types as long as they save space.

Do’s: Add a feature wall

Who says that a small bedroom can’t have a focal point? It is possible. One way is by creating a feature wall behind your bed to add more colours and patterns in the room without placing more decorative items that can cramp up the space. To set up this feature wall, you can consider using panels, wallpaper, or simply by applying several paint colours. However, make sure that the other walls are painted in neutral colours so that your bedroom doesn’t appear overwhelming.

Do’s: Hanging design

Besides setting a feature wall, you can also make use of vertical space to create a style and functionality in your small bedroom. The term ‘vertical space’ here refers to a design concept that takes advantage of walls to hang bedroom decoration, such as stick-on wall lights and shelves. You can also install a floating nightstand to work around the limited space.

Don’ts: Use too many patterns

Don’t use too many different patterns as it can make your small bedroom feel cramped. If you want to have a certain theme, set one spot as the focal point and one area as a place to display the patterns, perhaps on your pillowcase or curtain. As for the rest of the room, apply a plain, softer and calmer colour.

Do you know that there are a lot of boutique hotels with small bedrooms? They manage to make their small bedrooms look attractive and elegant. That’s because they apply a well-though-out interior design. Start with a monotone colour palette, then add either a soft headboard, a smooth bedroom rug/carpet or lightings in several spots. Hotels also always place a bedside table, although only with a small drawer, that can increase the functionality of the bedroom.

Do’s: Mirrors

Adding mirrors is commonplace to create a spacious impression in a small bedroom. It helps to reflect light and makes the room appear brighter and livelier. You can install mirrors on the wall behind your bed or hang wall mirrors.

Don’ts: Use non-functional furniture

The ‘less is more’ concept is suitable for a small bedroom because reducing non-functional elements and leave only the essential can save so much space. Declutter your bedroom and remove unnecessary furniture and decorative items.
