Tai Kok Tsui Pavilion designed by Su Chang Design Research Office is a winning entry through an Open Call Competition launched by Hong Kong Arts Centre (HKAC) in 2023, which was completed and opened to the public in January 2025. The competition sought to foreground and support emerging ecologically conscious young designers, with the aim to provide an avenue for turning the past into a future that values sustainability, art, culture, and creativity.

Funded by the Urban Renewal Fund (URF) and organized by the Public Art Department at HKAC, the design and construction of pavilion combines local galvanized steel crafts and laminated bamboo materials to create a communal space that transforms the Tai Kok Tsui neighbourhood and reactivates the public’s collective memory of Tai Kok Tsui’s unique spatial quality between sea and land, provoking a new imagination of Tai Kok Tsui’s urban future.

In this pavilion visit, Mr. Su Chang will give us a guided tour to showcase the design's concept and strategy, how it contributes to the social life of the transforming community, and the exploration of sustainability in design.

Two panel discussions will be held afterwards, the first one focusing on design aspects, role of competition and urban renewal process in Hong Kong with Ms. Elvy Chang, General Manager, Brand and Design Sino Group; Ms. Erica Chui, Chief Executive & Secretary to the Board, Urban Renewal Fund; Mr. Gordon Lo, Project director of RE: Tai Kok Tsui, Hong Kong Arts Centre; as well as one of the competition jurors, Ms. Yimei Chan, Co-Founder and Design Director of LOD. This panel will be moderated by AIA member, Mr. Su Chang.

The second panel will focus on the technical aspects or challenges during construction, with the Design Architect, Mr. Su Chang, Founder and Principal, Su Chang Design Research Office; the Architectural Consultant, Mr. Paul Tse, Co-Founder & Design Director, New Office Works (NOW); the Structural Consultant, Mr. Goman Ho, Director of Innovation, Arup and the Contractor, Mr. Ryan Lo, Director of Orlando Engineering CO Ltd.
