AtkinsRéalis Group Inc. (TSX: ATRL), a world-class engineering services and nuclear company with offices around the world, has been appointed, in joint venture with AECOM, by the Hong Kong Highways Department to provide consultancy services for the investigation of the Northern Metropolis Highway (NMH) project.

The project aims to connect key development nodes in the Northern Metropolis, like Ngau Tam Mei, Fanling North and the San Tin Technopole, to enhance east-west connectivity and cross-boundary road connections in the metropolitan area. It involves the proposed construction of a 23-kilometers (km)-long carriageway, including at-grade roads or viaducts of about 13km in length and a road tunnel of about 10km in length, extending from Tin Tsz Road and Tin Shui Wai in the west to Heung Yuen Wai Highway in the east.

AtkinsRéalis’ scope of work for the Northern Metropolis Highway project includes end-to-end multidisciplinary services for a 4.5km section, covering project management, geotechnical works, buildings, roadworks, and natural terrain hazard studies. Additionally, AtkinsRéalis will manage drainage, water, and sewage impact assessments, as well as environmental assessments for air and noise impacts, ensuring the highest standards of quality and safety standards. Once operational, the NMH is expected to divert approximately 40 per cent of traffic flow between the New Territories East and West during peak hours, reducing congestion on existing roads.
