Exploring Innovation and Collaboration at Zao Lab: A Visit to the Tsinghua Shenzhen International Graduate School Institute of Future Human Habitats
Led by Professor Terrence Curry, AIA, the attendees were welcomed with warmth and a seminar on the ideology of Zao Lab as an embodiment of bodily experiences. AIA Shenzhen representative Chen Xi, AIA, and AIA Hong Kong past president Yimei Chan, AIA, extended their welcome to AIA members from Hong Kong and Shenzhen, as well as various international students, ranging from masters to PhD students.
The attendees had the opportunity to witness cutting-edge technology and witness how fabrication is integrated into the students' daily work, providing a valuable reminder for practitioners. Terrence showcased life-size prototypes that are currently being tested as technologically-equipped living solutions.
During the visit, conversations were held with the students of Zao Lab, some of whom came from non-architectural backgrounds, in order to explore opportunities for collaboration. These collaborations aimed not only to foster partnerships among students but also to potentially involve AIA members. Such partnerships would contribute to staying at the forefront of innovation and ensuring that students are well-prepared for the future.
The visit to the Zao Lab left a lasting impression, not only as an educational experience but also as a source of inspiration. The vision of merging technology and architecture on a campus situated near some of the most exceptional start-ups proved to be a highly motivating factor for the students. Anticipation lingers to witness how this environment will shape their future endeavors, as well as the potential impact on the work of AIA members.
