Imagine transforming your home into a sanctuary like the caves our ancestors once sought shelter in. What if you bring the natural beauty of caves into your spaces to create a retreat?
We explore the designs of two hair salons that were both inspired by caves. Yet each has their own unique approach, featuring wall treatments that create two distinctly curated atmospheres. By embracing the natural beauty of stone, luxurious elegance is balanced with cosy charm. Enhancing various commercial projects from hotels to restaurants and to homes.
After years of working as an influencer, Stephy Yiwen and her business partners decided to transform the ordinary. hair salon experience into two very unique experiences.
One of the co-founders of Homme, Lizz shared, “When it comes to Homme, the focus is primarily on men’s hairstyle design. We believe that most hair salons tend to specialize in women’s hair. Therefore, here at our salon, we focus specifically on men’s hairstyle design. The name ‘Homme’ actually means ‘man’ in French. It can also be pronounced as Homme, but many people read it as ‘homie,’ which resembles the slang term for ‘brother’ or ‘buddy’.”
Whereas for Her Maison, Stephy shares that, “‘Her’ means ‘she’ and ‘Maison’ means ‘home’ in French, essentially creating ‘her home.’ We aim to make our customers feel like they’re at home when they step into our store. That’s why we named it ‘Her Maison’.”
“I’m Jackson, co-founder of Unicraft. Unicraft designs and decorates mostly tailor-made wall decorations, ranging from stones to 3D textures. The name of Unicraft actually came from “uniquely crafted” – a response to what we get in the market nowadays, where there are a lot of replications from mass production factories. The idea is to take out that uniformity and put in local handcraftmanship to make sure that every piece of our wall design is uniquely tailor-made.”
With Unicraft’s handcrafted technique, Jackson created a rugged, masculine space for Homme. The organic forms of a glimmering wall ornament and a stretching black sofa greet your arrival. Light catches on a reception carved on dark shiny stones, highlighting its cave-like texture.
Jackson shares, “We want to create something unique, something not often seen. That’s why if you look at the whole surrounding, it is blended with dark, grayish, and mountainous cave-like design. We want to create a cool space but at the same time look masculine. To give some contrast to this masculine feeling, we actually put an art piece at the entrance area inspired by the fluttering of a lady’s hair flying around.”
Going deeper into Homme is like venturing into a mysterious, cool cave. Dark cave-like walls cocoon the space, adding character. A dark interior creates a bold, sophisticated visual, further heightened by the furniture’s sleek metallic lines. In contrast to the soft curves of Her Maison, this space gives a unique cavernous feeling.
Liz shares, “The reason I chose this design style initially was because we wanted to focus on creating a hair salon with a black, white, and grey theme. We collaborated with Unicraft, who helped us bring this environment to life.”
“We actually smashed real crystal into tiny particles and then embedded it onto the stone wall, so it looks shimmering and crystallized,” shared Jackson.
A membrane light mimicking natural daylight highlights the cave-like walls. Floating metallic shelves reflect more light into the space. Together with lighting and mirrors, they curate a futuristic vibe. A hidden door ensures a seamless cave-like atmosphere across the entire space.
Liz elaborates, “When I first saw this design, I was quite worried at the beginning. I was concerned about how the final result would actually turn out. But when I saw the finished product, I was genuinely amazed. It was like, ‘Wow!’ I realized that a hair salon could also be designed in such a unique style.”

Can you imagine using similar materials, techniques, and even inspiration but creating a contrasting design outcome? If Homme embodies cool masculinity, then Her Maison is the complete opposite. In creamy beige tones, an inviting entrance greets us at Her Maison. The gently curving interior imbues the form of a cave, creating a sanctuary.
Stephy shared, “Since our team is entirely male, as the only woman, I considered what a female customer might want in a salon. I envisioned the kind of hair salon I’d personally want to walk into. Every detail reflects what I, as a customer, would like to experience, and I incorporated it all into our salon.”
The curved walls were designed to insulate the sound from the outside to create a soothing customer experience. Inside, a creamy white aesthetic radiates serenity. Instead of the usual designs of a row of chairs, the design of small booths angled away from each other gives customers subtle privacy. Circle lights overhead emphasize the visual theme of feminine softness.
Jackson explains, “For this project, we actually incorporate carpentry first, then subsequently do our foundation to make the existing surface solid before doing our wall decoration. The brand we brought in from Italy is Nicolo Italia, which we utilized as one of our main materials for wall decoration. On top of everything, it is really flexible for us to come up with varieties of design, especially handcrafted design.”
“The product is eco-friendly, zero VOC, and really easy to maintain. I think Malaysia and especially Asia deserve a really high-quality, eco-friendly product to decorate our walls,” says Jackson.
Homme embraces the dark mysterious persona of the cave, while Her Maison softens the rough cave textures. This is how cave aesthetics, with the right treatment, can elevate a space and captivate the imagination.
