It might be outdated to buy furniture in sets these days, especially if you want a more unique and casual look. But before you go about buying the various furniture pieces, here are some factors to consider, to ensure that everything mixes and matches well.
Take note of the size and ceiling height of the room, so you know which furniture pieces it can accommodate. Measure your space before you go shopping, and bring these dimensions with you to determine whether the furniture pieces you want can fit in nicely. Don't forget to factor in some tolerance and circulation space.
You may adore a particular piece, but try to visualise what it will look like in your space first. Picture it in a designated place alongside other furniture to make sure it will blend in. Take into consideration colours and materials, too.
How you use a space will largely determine what sort of furniture you need. Do you have a large family, or like lounging while watching TV? Do you entertain often? (This will determine if you might want a larger, L-shape sofa, or more armchairs.) Do you have a valuable collection of items to store and display? Do you need a reading corner?
The different furniture pieces you select should complement each other, but also the room’s architectural features, to maintain a balanced look. For example, choose sizeable pendant lamps if you have a high ceiling, see that the bench you place at the foot of the bed has a similar width as the bed — again, don't forget to measure and cross reference the dimensions of your furniture pieces, select sideboards that do not tower over a low-slung armchair, and do not mount a too-large mirror next to a small window.
