This house is sited prominently along a canal and popular jogging path. The project started from a figure of 8 diagram received from the client's geomancy expert. The number 8 carries many auspicious meanings for the Chinese. We took the opportunity to re-interprete the number 8 as a series of intersections between 2 axes, one facing diagonally upstream of the canal and one facing diagonally downstream. With the filleted corners, we were able to read multiple "eights" within the plan.
The fun of the project was figuring out how to bring the curves beyond the plan, into the space and across the section. A key move here was to cut a profile out of the forward pitch of the roof to link up with the coping of the second storey. The resulting cantilever serves well to give shade over the master bedroom terrace overlooking the river.
An internal wall cladding of oak strips is a constant element that links the common areas of all the floors, guiding the circulation horizontally and vertically.
Amidst all the geometry going on, a sensible and highly functional plan (if we may say so ourselves) was worked in. The curve found its way again into the built furniture. The fluid interplay of solid colours and white oak echoes the ideas of the architectural form.
