NAGATO (means eternity in Japanese) house design is a project that is inspired by the client’s personal journey on the unification of two people, family, and dreams, and how it becomes a new beginning for their future journey. Representing the client’s philosophy, the building mass translated into two different triangular masses. The facade is highlighted by the vertical stripes made of corrugated metal sheets intended to emphasize the building's proportion.
Located in a townhouse complex, Nagato House seeks to challenge the uniformity of typical housing design in Indonesia. Complemented by the huge windows and its asymmetrical triangular shapes, both features serve the purpose of distinguishing the building while also visually coherence with its surroundings.
Carrying the hope of an everlasting journey and a new beginning, the combination of white and earth tones were chosen as the main palette in the design. White represents purity and positivity for the new beginning, it amplifies a simple, minimalist, and spacious ambiance, while the earth tone materials for the openings, floor, and furniture provide a sense of warmth in the design. Translating the client’s needs, the design connects the indoor and outdoors area through an open layout. Connecting the garden to the living - dining - kitchen, studio, and service area, as well as the carport. Meanwhile, vertically, the design provides a double-height ceiling that connects the living area on the first floor with the working space on the second floor. The connectivity maximizes the passive energy acquired by natural light and air circulation throughout the building.
