Three daughters wanted to build a retirement home for their beloved mother and her cats in their hometown. A newly purchased standard townhouse inside an enclosed quarter is refurbished to cater to larger bedrooms, bathroom, kitchen-dining, and creating additional rooftop seating.
The design calls for a rather modest additional two-story volume consuming half of the backyard to generate a balanced outside-inside and horizontal-vertical sequence while embracing the low-temperature contrast of tropical climate. The whole backyard addition was later draped with white mesh for safety reasons as well as allowing the cats to go outside without wandering to the neighbor’s house.
In the interior, the dark green-themed kitchen cabinet was designed with the warm balance from a herringbone wood parquet and rattan chair. A skylight and a large sliding door toward the backyard provide abundant skylight in the kitchen, providing a well-lit workspace for the mother’s cooking hobby.
