Wetlands master planning in Kigali, Rwanda

Rwanda has more than 935 wetlands, with a total area of 176, 337 ha. Lakes account for a further 120, 000 ha.

SMEC, a member of the Surbana Jurong Group, was appointed by Rwanda’s Ministry of Environment to prepare a comprehensive wetland master plan for Kigali City in order to support the city in sustainably managing and utilising its wetlands system.

SMEC’s role includes conducting detailed studies for hydrology, land use, ecosystem, socio-economic analysis; development of a conservation investment plan; and integration of the economic valuation of urban wetlands ecosystem. The project, funded by the United Nations Development Programme, is expected to be completed within four months from commencement in June 2019.
