De.U Coffee 2.0 is the second establishment of De.U Coffee, is strategically situated adjacent to a canal on a L-shaped plot spanning 540 sqm in the bustling city of Bandung. The location is characterized by high foot traffic and frequent cyclists, and also frequented by numerous communities of young parents who often bring their children to enjoy the outdoor ambiance. This dynamic interaction between users and the environment further enriches the design, encouraging a vibrant and family-friendly atmosphere. The inclusion of thoughtfully designed outdoor spaces caters to the needs of these communities, providing a welcoming and engaging setting for both relaxation and social interaction
Given the elongated and narrow nature of the site, the architectural design is bifurcated into two distinct masses. The terrace zone and the main zone. The terrace, prominently positioned at the front site with fairly narrow width, is circular in shape, maximizing visibility and creating a striking contrast with the surrounding urban landscape. This zone serves as both a reception and waiting area, with its outer perimeter facilitating the primary circulation towards the main zone. The circulation path is accentuated by a rhythmic series of inclined planes and skylight, casting dynamic light patterns on the raw, exposed concrete wall opposite, highlighting its textured imperfections.
The main zone’s architecture is designed to align with the site’s natural curvature. Utilizing a minimalistic material palette, raw concrete predominates as the principal wall finish, complemented by strategically placed skylights that allow natural light to permeate the interior, enhancing the concrete’s textured beauty. Glass walls on various facades enhance visual connectivity with the exterior and impart a sense of spaciousness. Wooden elements are thoughtfully incorporated in the furniture and partitions, infusing warmth and a natural ambience into the industrial aesthetic.
At the heart of the design is a semi-circular staircase, encased by a concrete wall, leading to the second floor which also provides seating for users. This staircase anchors the building’s vertical circulation and opens up to a central courtyard. The courtyard, a multifunctional space, bridges the public seating area with private zones such as the storage, kitchen, and restrooms. It also features a playground, allowing children to play under parental supervision, enhancing the community-centric experience of the café.
Overall, De.U Coffee 2.0 exemplifies a harmonious blend of raw materials and natural light, creating an inviting, dynamic space that engages both its immediate urban environment and the patrons who frequent it.
