Colonial building has always had its own charm. One of the ways to preserve its long-standing history in this modern world is to convert the building into commercial place like what we’ve done in this coffee shop. Built in 1954, the original building was used as a hotel named ‘Hotel Dago’ although then history of the hotel itself is quite vague due to only few written records available. Over time, the hotel gradually became deteriorated and the rooms ended up being rented as office spaces. However, when we visited the building in the 2018, it was already long abandoned.
The original building has already had good floorplan. The first floor was divided into lobby-receptionist area, small-scaled restaurant for breakfast, and service area at the back. The second floor was dedicated to three adjoined rooms and had direct access to the service area. Therefore, the current floorplan has only few adjustments. The first floor became the indoor seating area and bar, while the kitchen/service area was adjusted because we needed to get bigger capacity. The second floor now is used as private rooms and small office.
Sustainable design with sleek and modern look was chosen as the main concept while preserving the unique interior of the original building. Moreover, we wanted to highlight the adaptive reuse process for this building. As we wanted to preserve the original patina of the building, we applied rustic finishing in the end. The lighting details also bring the forgotten, abandoned building back to life. Even though the building is located on the busy area, there is a distance between the building and the main road so it reduces the level of noise. It feels like walking to a hidden place, away from the busy streets.
