The new home for the university’s College of Arts & Sciences anchors a busy downtown corner
UAB’s first new academic building in over 20 years, this open, light-filled building features architectural elements proven to be conducive to learning and incorporates wireless and multimedia technologies throughout. The 95,000sf building holds classrooms, lecture halls, instructional labs, and faculty offices; and was designed to maximize opportunities for learning and collaboration in the “between” spaces. Flexible classroom configurations accommodate multiple teaching modalities. Sited on a busy corner of the university’s main street and anchoring one corner of the University Green, the building’s monumental glazed corner element and cascading steps offer a clear sense of entry while a 2-story glazed atrium with first-floor lobby facing the Green floods the interior with natural light. The interior incorporates school colors and branding. KPS completed the project in association with Goody Clancy Architects.
