JWT’s new Sydney office marries brand and building rebirth. On Sydney’s CBD fringe, the emergent workplace supports the recent global rebranding and celebrates JWT’s local presence with a fresh face - a unique, dynamic space. The refurbishment of JWT’s new premises in a heritage conversion in Pyrmont was the perfect opportunity to trial the ABW concept within WPP’s portfolio of businesses.
Work anywhere, work anytime
Working with JWT’s Australian management team, heads of department including TV Production, Editing, Marketing, IT and business services a more collaborative, ‘work anywhere, work anytime’ approach was established.

Geyer’s design supports this through a unique, dynamic space. By peeling back the internal lining and ceiling, a triple height void was revealed, within which Geyer inserted a mezzanine floor. This acts as a visual and physical connector, and focus of the main interaction zones. In addition to the work-floor, a client area including an outdoor terrace has been created for entertaining clients and for additional flexible working.
Creating a journey
The planning centres on creating a journey, offering clients an opportunity to observe and immerse themselves within the everyday working life of JWT. Flow throughout was achieved by embracing the heritage building fabric and using a consistent base building finishes palette.
Diversity provides choice
The workspace accommodates headspace in this often frenetic industry. A diversity of work settings provides choice, emphasising opportunity for interaction balanced by quiet nooks.
An industrial aesthetic
JWT’s brief called for an industrial aesthetic. To achieve this, Geyer investigated the building’s potential which led to the discovery of a triple height void hidden above the ceiling grid. This allowed Geyer to insert an interconnecting stair and mezzanine level within that space. It also revealed and allowed the integration of a number of the original features into the design, that would otherwise have remained unseen.
The Antidote to Indifference
The overarching design concept expands on JWT’s philosophy of “The Antidote to Indifference”. It provides a blank canvas space that is engaging, eclectic and interactive.
A comfortable workplace
The design’s ‘big idea’ provides an engaging, eclectic, interactive reconfigurable space, making a difference to how JWT’s people create, communicate and collaborate amongst themselves and with clients.
Large gallery windows flood the working floor with natural light. Access to this light has been maximised by opening up the majority of the floor to the full double height. A raw, natural and warm materials’ palette has been used to create the sense of comfort.
A space to think
A space that conforms and flexes to different ways of working. An antidote to standard work. JWT are thrilled by this award-winning space and staff feedback has been overwhelmingly positive.
