How do we meet people
Ideas for Kumulo Creative Compound
In collaboration with Accossa Lab and Kumulo team
People have their preferences and favorite places to meet the others, some prefer to meet indoors, and the others love to go outdoors. Besides the occasion, the food, etc, the place and its spatial character also play a big role in affecting people’s decision on where and how to meet. How people perceive and experience the space is interesting as well.
Together with the Kumulo team and Accossa Lab, we had a chance to explore this issue in a scenario and spirit of a creative compound; a place where the creatives gather, becoming each other’s neighbors; a place where the creator and people could meet.
The ideation started from dismantling the programs.
We used to see the never-ending shopfront situation in a retail/café/restaurant typology. From there, we tried to break that situation, inserting new spaces in between. Existing landscape, trees, and various activities will fill those spaces. All of a sudden, we could have a flowing outdoor space that plays a huge role as a space for activities, and a place where people could meet.
This separation between functions and program allows the space and form to stand on its own, having possibilities of natural light, cross ventilation, visual continuation and transparency, even also could have its own character.
Regarding the usage and function, we used simple modulation as the base of scale/ size for each form, 3x3x3m as the basic volume, then double it, triple it, so on and so forth, depending on the proportion and function. This example of modulation is important in the (semi) prefabrication construction, making it faster with less waste.
We also used simple operation to compose different characters of form for each function, a slightly different shape or size, but still feels like a family of forms. We felt this character of forms, shapes, spaces, are interesting, especially also for the creatives, later when they personalize the space.
In relation with the outdoor space, we arranged the massing and space in between in a composition that allows people to feel the different scales of an outdoor space, sometimes it is narrow, enclosed and intimate, sometimes with a large space exposure. We thought that this situation could give a distinct experience for the visitor, different and various spaces to explore.
Then there was about perception, we thought that distance always plays a crucial role in this case. We composed the circulation, massing, and space in between so people can perceive the collection of form, the space, the display/exhibition from different distances.
As an example, from a distance, they can see the collection of forms, which are simple and easy to perceive, then existing trees as background. From there they can see more clear forms with activities in between. In more closer distance, what they see is the display of each store/function.
These forms and spaces are prepared as the stage or background, a place where the scenarios of the creatives gather with neighbors, friends, and people could happen in an interesting way
